MTP (Medical termination of pregnancy) kit is used for the medical termination of pregnancy before 9 weeks of gestation (the period during which embryo develops) with the help of tablet formulations. In this process, we do not require the surgical procedure for an abortion. MTP kit mainly contains two drugs Mifepristone and Misoprostol in different strengths. One tablet of 200mg Mifepristone is present in MTP kit and four tablets of Misoprostol 200mcg. Mifepristone works by binding to the progesterone receptor and inhibit the effect of progesterone and produces contractions of the uterus and Misoprostol, is a prostaglandin analogue, it works by inducing myometrial contraction which leads to labour pain in pregnant and non pregnant women.
This Misoprostol also causes cervical ripening, softening and dilation of cervix. After taking Mifepristone and Misoprostol women normally feel Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or dizziness, pain, cramping, bleeding, fever and hot flashes. Mifepristone should not be taken if a women is taking long-term corticosteroid therapy (e.g., prednisone), drugs affecting liver enzymes. It will directly eliminate the Mifepristone from our body.
Before using Misoprostol we should tell the doctor about our previous medical history and we are not taking any herbal medicine. We should also tell the doctor about our allergy conditions, consuming alcohol or blood disorder. If we are using any IUD (Intra Uterine Device) we should not use MTP kit for termination of pregnancy. In the case of undiagnosed abdominal growth (adrenal mass) and certain adrenal gland problem (chronic adrenal failure) we should not use MTP without consulting the doctor.
The dose administration in MTP can be done in two days. Firstly we should take one tablet of Mifepristone (200mg) orally. After that on the third day we take four tablet of Misoprostol (200 mcg) by orally or vaginally. We can take Misoprostol by both the routes orally or vaginally. If we are taking Misoprostol vaginally we should use 3-4 drops of saline water. Mostly patient prefer the oral route for taking this drug because vaginal route is risky. We should also remember that if we are taking Mifepristone we should not take grape fruit because it will block the metabolism of Mifepristone. If the metabolism of Mifepristone gets inhibited, it will stop the elimination of Mifepristone and that will produce toxic effects in the body.
