We’ve all heard of colon cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. But, there are more rare types of cancer you have never heard of. Likelihood of developing those forms of cancer is minimal. But the fact that those cancers are very rare doesn’t mean you should overlook them. It is good to find out more about them and their symptoms in particular.
Here are five cancers that you probably didn’t know existed.
1. Vaginal cancer
This rare cancer only affects about 1% of women. As the women age, their vaginal cells change. That increases the likelihood of developing cancer. The chance of getting vaginal cancer is the greatest in women who reach menopause. Sexually transmitted diseases can also increase odds of getting this cancer. The same goes for genital warts like human papillomavirus.
Talk to your gynecologist if you experience any unusual bleeding or irritation. Ask your doctor for a cancer screening. And don’t avoid going to annual gynecology appointments.
2. Foot Cancer
It’s might be hard for you to associate word “cancer” with feet. These two things can be related, though. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of foot cancer. Foot melanoma makes about 4 percent of all melanoma cases. The environmental carcinogens and genetics are the main reasons for this rare disease.
Foot cancer often goes unnoticed since it is uncommon. The warning signs that may point to this cancer include:
- Strange sensations
3. Salivary Gland Cancer
Salivary glands secrete enzymes that are necessary for proper food digestion. Those enzymes also improve the resistance to infection. Cancer cells very rarely develop in the salivary glands. Only one, or even fewer, in 100,000 people suffer from this type of cancer.
The most common symptoms of the salivary gland cancer include:
- Lumps on the cheeks
- Lumps in the ear
- Lumps around and in the mouth
The good news is that the chance of recovery is more than 90% if the cancer is caught early. The treatment includes surgery and radiation.
Chordoma is cancer that develops in bones, especially in the skull and spine. This type of cancer is diagnosed in 1 in a million people. It grows from the tiny residues of cartilage that left in our body from when we have been in utero. Despite being slow, this cancer is very aggressive. It is painful because of the sensitive location where it develops. Chordoma often causes neck pain, headaches, and double vision. Some patients experience loss of bladder and bowel function. Tingling in the legs and arms is also typical for this disease.
5. Malignant Mesothelioma
This rare but aggressive cancer develops in the lining around lungs and in the abdomen. In rare cases, it may appear in the mesothelial tissues of heart and testicles. Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of this illness up to now. Learn more about malignant mesothelioma here: https://www.mesotheliomahelp.org/mesothelioma/.
The late detection of these cancers makes them so dangerous. You shouldn’t be paranoid if you have noticed some strange symptom. But you should not ignore the warning signs at all. It’s smart to stay alert and visit your doctor if you noticed something uncommon.
